Python course with Dispuut Verkeer
As programming has become an indispensable part of any engineering field, a basic Python course was organised for our students to refresh and sharpen their programming skills. Dispuut Verkeer, the dispuut of the MSc track ‘Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics’, hosted three sessions of two hours, in which the basics of Python were explained by two programming experts. The first session served as an introduction to Python. In this session the students got familiar with the basic functionalities of Python and the use of its many libraries. The second session was all about data analysis. Here, the students could try some hands on programming themselves by manipulating and extrapolating data from large data sets. Also, this session contained a short introduction to the use of machine learning algorithms in data analysis. Finally, in the last session the students were thought how to optimise linear programming problems by using the Gurobi library. We would like to thank Dispuut Verkeer for letting our students join their event. Combining our two disputes, we were able to motivate over 35 students to participate in this three day event. Let’s see what some teamwork with Dispuut Verkeer can bring us and them in the future!

Introduction days
A couple of weeks ago study association Transportkunde Pandora hosted its annual introduction days. Normally this is a two day event where multiple companies are visited and an overnight stay in Rotterdam is accompanied by a couple of drinks. Sadly due to the COVID-19 situation this was not possible. But we still wanted to provide the first years students with the opportunity to meet each other in real life. To do this we booked a whole beach club so the corona measures could be enforced. At the beach club we had a dinner and two pubquizes. The first one was given by Nemag. For most of the first year students this was the first acquaintance with a real Multi-Machine Engineering company. The second quiz was hosted by our very own Wouter van den Bos and really got people excited. At the end a lot of the first year students were happy to have met each other physically rather than online, and said they were delighted to start their year of the way they did.
Germany trip
A little while ago a group of about 20 enthusiastic students went on the yearly Germany trip. The trip started on Thursday morning at 9 AM, when we got on the bus and started driving to the first company, which was a power plant facility which cooperated with Eurosilo. We first got a presentation which showed how the construction of such a huge facility took place and how much power it could generate. After that we got a tour of the plant. Unfortunately it was not running at the time, but the shear size of everything was very impressive nevertheless. After our visit we got back on the bus to drive to Aken, where we would spend the night. Luckily for us it was carnival when we came to visit, so the whole city was filled with fun activities. After a night out on the town we had the morning off to all get a nice breakfast. With all bellies filled we got back on the bus for the second company visit, a brown coal mine. Again we first got a presentation about the company, after which we got a tour of the mine. The mine stretches for multiple square kilometers and is home to the largest vehicles in the world ( in front of which we are posing in the picture ). After this visit we had nothing left to do but go home and reflect on an amazing two days filled with lots of laughs and educative moments.
Lunchlezing Royal Haskoning 14/10/2019
On monday the 14th of October, Sander van den Brand from Royal Haskoning came to the TU to deliver a lunch lecture. The engineering and project management consultancy has a lot to offer, not only throughout Europe but also worldwide. During the lunch lecture we were introduced to where the company operates as well as taking a closer look at some projects that had been conducted closer to home. At Royal Haskoning, all kinds of projects come through the door. From offshore wind farms to logistical revamps and transport planning, meaning no two jobs are quite the same. Due to the excellent overlap of our master and the projects at Royal Haskoning, a large number of the employees at the Rotterdam branch are graduated MME students and the career possibilities within the company for current students are excellent. Keep an eye out for upcoming vacancies and don’t forget to check out their current graduation projects that are listen on our website.
